Illicit drug use among furries is difficult to quantify without formal study. However, observation of small groups within the fandom provides some insight.
[edit] Prevalence of Illicit Drug Use and Addiction
Compared with the public at large, illicit drug use and addiction issues appear to be fairly uncommon within the furry fandom. One theory is that the fandom itself gives focus and an imaginative outlet to young people who might otherwise turn to drugs for escape; another theory suggests that the fandom merely reflects its overriding demographic (educated, middle-class).
Whatever the case, drug issues rarely intrude in furry fandom. However, some characteristics are worth noting.
[edit] Types of Drugs Used
Anecdotal evidence suggests that alcohol is the most-frequently abused drug in the fandom, as in the public at large. Marijuana use is especially popular on the West Coast of the U.S., while ecstasy sometimes makes an appearance at late-night dances and parties.
[edit] Context of Drug Use
Two situations in particular give furries occasion to use drugs together: conventions and furries living together.
Drug use at the major conventions is governed by three factors:
- All conventions have strict use against illicit drug use (including underage drinking)
- The convention itself is run at a hotel or other private facility that includes sleeping rooms, where drug use is more private, more social, and safer than in one's daily life. (Overnight stays make driving unnecessary; con-going friends can keep an eye on the user.)
- Drug availability -- especially alcohol -- is increased for some people, as alcohol is often present and both public and private room parties.
