Wolf roleplay forums are a popular gaming type today in the area of roleplaying games. Wolf roleplays have been growing in popularity throughout the years; most wolf roleplays are forum-based, but a few are chatroom-based. Forum-based roleplay, also commonly called play-by-post roleplay, is played on a forum (popular versions free versions include proboards and invisionfree) where one character starts a thread to set the scene and actions and others respond. Chat-based roleplays are done in live chat groups where players chat dialog indicate their characters speech and actions.

There are many generes of wolf roleplay ranging anywhere from strictly realistic roleplay to high-fantasy, to an intermediate mix of both. Stict realistic roleplays adhere to natural coat colorations, body demensions, and breeding times while high fantasy can allow anything from magical powers, to neon fur, to mutations. Another distinction among wolf roleplays is the level – most commonly only used among forum-based roleplays – of difficulty. Beginner consists of one/two lined posts up to one paragraph. Intermediate consists of two to three strong paragraphs of roleplay, while Advanced is anything over four strong paragraphs of roleplay. A “strong” paragraph is a thorough and detailed paragraph with details and imagery (usually ranging anywhere from five to nine sentences).

Wolf Roleplays immitate the interactions that take place among real wolves and as such, they usually have a highly defined heirarchy and dominance/submission behaviors. As well, most wolf roleplays have a complex history or plot that drives their site though some are more straightforward and do not have a site-wide plot to follow. The main focus of the wolf roleplay is the pack life of the wolf and usually there is a board (territory) set aside for individual packs to roleplay in. One constant of all wolf roleplays is the character profile (though specifics vary from site to site) which contains specifics and information about the character which others can veiw.

Creating a good wolf roleplay is time consuming and takes a lot of work. Sites that remain active for long stretches of time usually have a unique set-up that defines them from other sites, a dedicated administrative team to keep the boards updated, a loyal member base that contributes with suggestions to the site, thorough rules and information topics, and a good overall set-up. Lets not forget that visually appealing sites attract more guests than others. Sites that have been around for 3+ years have administrators who are online daily to keep the board updated and leader characters (pack leaders) who create pack and site events for other members to participate in. This is the most important aspect of running a wolf roleplay: keeping updated.
